  • Dan Rather & MSM Suggest It's Okay to Give Ann Romney a Pass for Gaffes Add to Favorites

    By newcenturywoman  with ...
Should Ann Romney, the wife of millionaire Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, get a pass for her recent political gaffes?

This question has become the source of wide-range debate recently, particularly following Mrs. Romney's remarks on Monday suggesting that she does "not consider myself wealthy."
Earlier this month Mrs. Romney joked that she "could just strangle" the press, a remark that received little push back.

The mainstream news media, including prominent newspapers and major TV networks, have urged the public to put Mrs. Romney's latest remarks in context. Former CBS News Anchor Dan Rather suggested giving Mrs. Romney a pass because she is only the "spouse" of a presidential candidate and not herself a candidate running for office.
Meanwhile, critics are saying Mrs. Romney should not "get a pass" and instead should get the same news media treatment that First Lady Michelle Obama received when her husband--now President Obama--first ran for President. Some critics even question if the news media have a tendency to treat Mrs. Obama differently because she is Black.

  • First Lady Michelle Obama Reaches out to Women Voters Add to Favorites

    By newcenturywoman  with ...

"On nights like tonight, I don't just feel why we should we win, I SEE why we WILL win!" That's how one Obama volunteer called it after participating in a night of house parties with First Lady Michelle Obama, sponsored by Women for Obama.

In a conference call opened to some 1,000 participants who held house parties, Mrs. Obama told the volunteers that President Obama "knows that lifting up women lifts up our economy..a woman making less than a man hurts an entire family."

Mrs. Obama headlined the nationwide get-together. The event was one of a series of outreach activities signaling the First Lady’s efforts in taking on a more visible role in the President’s re-election campaign..

Mrs. Obama’s efforts couldn't have come at a better time than now as women's issues have emerged as a key area of debate in this year's presidential race. The controversy over women’s reproductive rights, in particular, has brought women’s issues to forefront as Republican legislators have begun pushing an ugly, anti-women agenda in recent weeks, and women of all backgrounds, religions, and political persuasions have begun pushing back.

During the conference call, the First Lady is expected to discuss the progress the Obama Administration has made over the past three years and address what goals remain. She is also expected to remind the Obama volunteers of why it is so important to work to get President Obama reelected so that he may build on his list of accomplishments—including signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act—a major step forward for women's equality—and his leadership in passing historic health reform that now gives women access to a wide range of preventive health services, including contraception, mammograms, and well-woman visits, all without a co-pay.

During the month of February, Mrs. Obama has hit the road--both formally and informally--to tout both her message of women's fitness and health, and President Obama’s huge list of accomplishments. On yesterday, the First Lady Michelle Obama headlined a major donor fund-raiser lunch for an Obama "Women and Technology" event in Washington before welcoming a group of students to a Blues at the White House event in celebration of Black History Month.

If Twitter activity is any indication, then volunteers across America appear to be excited about the First Lady’s anticipated participation in the Women for Obama conference call and house parties.

  • British Newspaper Admits to Lying about First Lady’s Lingerie Purchase; Are Our News Media Complicit? Add to Favorites

    By newcenturywoman  with ...
Journalism 101 Question of the Week: What do you call any news organization that prints, broadcasts, or repeats an outlandish claim which slanders an unsuspecting public figure, fails to provide verifiable evidence, and lacks credible sources to back up the claim?

If you answered, "Irresponsible," then you are correct. You may just have a promising future in the exciting world of journalism--for whatever that's worth these days.

Journalism students across America and thousands of other followers of "real" news recently got a chance to see first-hand just how irresponsible our nation's own news media have been in their handling of a London-based newspaper's report that erroneously claimed First Lady Michelle Obama went on a $50,000 shopping spree to buy lingerie. To no one's real surprise, The Telegraph admitted this week that it told a boldface lie:

"...we would like to make clear that the 'shopping spree' involving Her Highness Sheikha Moza and Michelle Obama that we referred to in fact never occurred, and that Her Highness has never been shopping with Mrs Obama, at Agent Provocateur or otherwise," reads an excerpt from a small-print correction posted on the front page of the Telegraph online.

Of course, the initial false "news" story spread throughout our nation's news media a little over a week ago with all the furor of an uncontainable wildfire. Conservative radio and television broadcasters ran with the story and used it as another personal attack against Mrs. Obama. Tabloids had a field day. 'Legitimate' newspapers and cable news networks lead with attention-grabbing headlines. Even the Whitehouse press corp put pressure on President's Obama's press secretary to prove that the rumor was false.

Now, just one week following the national hoopla, The Telegraph, the newspaper that started the false claim, wants everyone to simply accept its correction to a story it knew to be false. What's more disheartening, however, is the deafening silence we've heard from our nation's own 'legitimate' news media who have failed to denounce The Telegraph's claim--or at least to not give credence to it--even before this week's admission.

Unfortunatley, our news media's silence teaches a dangerous lesson to young people hoping to seek a career in journalism, a profession once heralded as honorable. With our Fourth Estate today, it seems, fairness and truth mean nothing anymore--sensationalism means everything.

As someone who once spent a short stint in the newspaper business, let me add this: When the news hounds of our Fourth Estate resort to 'sniffing out' the First Lady's underwear, well, let's just say journalism has reached an all-time low in America.

  • Michelle Obama Gets Lots of Twitter Love on B-Day Add to Favorites

    By newcenturywoman  with ...
How does one say, “I love thee . . .”? Just let Michelle Obama count the ways.

If there’s any doubt that Americans love their First Lady, then just take a look at today’s Twitter roll. Thousands among thousands of tech savvy tweeters grabbed their laptops, BlackBerrys, Iphones, Ipads, and other smartphone and PDA devices to give Mrs. Obama a shout-out and wish her “Happy 48th Birthday.”

A sampling of messages sent via Twitter were varied. Among the more colorful tweets was this: “To our elegant, intelligent, and beautiful First Lady...We LOVE you Lady O!!! 4 More Years!” And this: "Drove my Hummer to the Young Republicans meeting. Happy Birthday Michelle Obama!" And then there was this: “Happy Birthday to the King of the Ring and the Queen of the White House.” Mrs. Obama shares a birthday with legendary boxer Muhammad Ali who turned 70 today.

  • Michelle Obama Shows Star Power on Twitter (UPDATED!!!) Add to Favorites

    By newcenturywoman  with ...
It hasn't been a full week yet, but First Lady Michelle Obama's numbers are going through the roof -- no, not her polls numbers but her Twitter numbers.

The First Lady emerged last week as a powerhouse in the World of Twitter, closing in on 350,000 followers by mid-day today -- just five days after the Obama 2012 campaign staff announced her official debut on Twitter. That's an average of 70,000 new followers a day since last Thursday!

Signing as "-mo" under the handle @michelleobama, the First Lady has sent out four tweets since her first day online. Her first two tweets included thanking the thousands of tweeters who welcomed her to Twitter and another asking for their participation in MLK Day of Service which was observed today.

Announcement of the First Lady's tweets last Thursday prompted a surge of responses on Twitter from a diverse mix of commenters, ranging from little-known bloggers to star-studded celebrities to attention-seeking pundits, even a few of the crazies. The First Lady also reached her long, slender arms across the border and across foreign waters, picking up a number of new followers -- including such tweeters as a "hairstylist/professional weaver from London," a "project manager in Latin America," and a "law-n-biz skool student from smalltown Ontario."

By the day's end last Thursday, Mrs. Obama had garnered close to a quarter of a million followers--a number that utlimately moved her past one of her husband's chief political rivals, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. To date, Romney has 262,916 followers--almost a hundred thousand followers shy of the 349,026 followers and counting that Mrs. Obama had gained by the end of Monday, MLK Day.

Of course, the First Lady who insists she has no intentions of ever being a politician or a celebrity has quite a ways to go to compete with her husband's Twitter numbers. To date, President Obama has 11,957,135 Twitter followers. With close to 12 million followers, the President surpasses all his political opponents combined and remains on the Top Ten list of the most followed people in the world on Twitter.

On her debut, Michelle Obama clearly out classed an author whose name shall not be mentioned who recently appeared on Twitter promoting her controversial biography of the Obamas. The journalist who recently turned book author drew tremendous pushback on Twitter during the week for questionable and unsubstantiated details included in the book. Meanwhile, in a three-part, wide-ranging interview with "CBS This Morning," Mrs. Obama graciously refuted some of the excerpts from the book as untruths and exaggerations.

Here's a summary of the responses from Twitter commenters who were among the first to put out the welcome mat for their beloved "Michelle" on lastThursday. Although Mrs. Obama received thousands of tweets over the course of the week, only those tweets using the phrase "welcome @michelle obama" are included in this story. Comments from her fans and supporters grew by the hundreds of thousands throughout the day and the remainder of the week.
